Task 3 Understand Software Technology for Games Platforms

What is Platform Dependency?
Platform dependency is when a game is a console exclusive because it needs that systems operating system games that are like are Uncharted and the persona series. These games need to run on their respective systems to work because they have not been made to work on other systems.
Advantages:
Disadvantages:

platform dependent games include:
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

Persona 4 Golden

Pokemon Sun and Moon

J Stars Victory VS+

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth

What is Platform Independency?
Platform independency is when a game can run on any system because it is not independent on the system. Examples of these would be games like GTA V or web based games like candy crush. Because it is an independent game it can play on pretty much any console since it’s not reliant. other platform independent games include:
Advantages:
Disadvantages:

Dragonball Xenoverse 2

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

Skyrim

GTA V

What is the purpose of an Operating System?
The OS or operating system is the single most important thing that belongs on a computer. the OS runs all of the computers processes, manages the memory, and all of the software and hardware including all the games that are on the computer so basically no matter who you are you will have one of these on your computer because without one the computer is just a pile of useless wires and other pieces with no purpose.

Give examples of OS on the following devices?
every console has a OS because without them they cant do anything, the XBOX's OS is called the One Core or Xbox OS Code. the PlayStation consoles have the Orbis OS system. A PC/ computer can have either Linux or Windows that it will run with each being different and you can choose between the two because of how customisable a PC is. Mobile phones all have different OS but my own phone which is quite new is a Samsung Galaxy S7 runs on the OS Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The 3DS runs on the Nintendo 3DS system software.

What is the purpose of a Device Driver?
the purpose of a device driver is to control and activate any device that is attached to your computer, the device driver is needed to activate anything that is connected. there is a device driver in pretty much anything ranging from but not limited to: Printers, keyboards, mouses, CD/DVD/Blu-ray readers etc.

What is an API and what does it do?
API stands for Application Program interface, what a API does is it builds software applications by using tools, routines and protocols and other things. API's tells the software how they should interact with each other. basically this is how all the pieces of information are able to react to each other inside of the computer.

Select a range of games and research the following;
Game 1: Web Based - Happy Wheels
happy wheels is a very simple web based games where you ride through obstacle course and try not to die, anyone can make a map for you to have a go at including yourself. the maps can range from very simple ones to more complicated ones and when you doe its very brutal with blood and guts everywhere. Since happy wheels is a web based game it is not platform dependent, you can use pretty much any operating system because it is platform independent so the OS that it can run are but not limited to windows and Linux. the drivers that you would need would be for the mouse and keyboard.

Game 2: Computer Based - Danganronpa 2
Danganronpa 2 is a platform independent game because it is on steam and it is also on the PS Vita. The story of the Danganronpa games or well the second of the games follows a group of high school students who are trapped on an island by their high school's "headmaster" Monokuma, which is stuffed bear with a mind of its own. he gives rules out and says that if you want to leave the island you have to kill someone and not get found out in the trial that follows and anyone who attacks Monokuma shall be executed. Danganronpa 2 is a platform independent game because it can run on. like previously mentioned Danganronpa 2 is a platform independent game because it is on steam and it is also on the PS Vita so it can run on both system,s like Windows and the PlayStation Vita system software which is from the Unix-like OS family. the drivers that are needed are either the drivers for the mouse and keyboard or for a controller such as the steam controller or the PlayStation/Xbox controller.

Game 3: Console Based - Persona 5
Persona 5 is a console game that is a platform dependant on the PlayStation consoles. Persona 5 takes place in Tokyo, and follows a silent protagonist after they get transferred to a new high school and while being at that new school he and some other students awaken a new power called persona which is a supernatural manifestations of their psyche which they use to battle the ill intent of corrupted adults. Since Persona 5 is platform dependant on the play station consoles the operating system that needs is either  Unix-like Orbis OS or the almost identical PlayStation 3 system software. The only drivers that persona 5 needs is the ones that runs the PlayStation controllers.

Application Software used (Programming)
Focus on Unity 5 or the CryEngine – Use images or videos
Unity
Unity is a cross-platform game engine developed by Unity Technologies and can be used to develop video games for PC, consoles, mobile devices and websites. Unity 1 was originally relesed 11 years ago on the 8th of June 2005 and there latest release was just over a month ago on the 13th of october 2016 and was version 5.4.2, Unity can be written in C, C++, C#,JavaScript and Boo.

This is thge layout of Unity 5.4.1. on the layout from the beginning there is a few things there is a Hierarchy, assets, a inspector and some other useful things on the top bar.

When you start out the hierarchy it will be empty but once you have created anything from objects to lights they will appear here this makes them much easier to find and a lot easier to put together since as the name implies you can create a hierarchy of objects such as making a light source and a flashlight and putting the light source under the flashlight in the hierarchy and by doing this you'd be able to move the flashlight and the light will follow.

on this top bar youd be able to click on the differnt icons. the first icon is how you would drag the screen the second is how you move the opbjects, the third is the rotation tool, the fourth is the resize tool and the final one is more of a free style resize tool.

Thius is the inspector which allows yopu to view the properties o9f nanything selected and in this case it is the cube. thjings that you can edit inc;ludr the position, rotation, scale, size aswell as many other things.

down at the bottom includes all assets that you have made and taken from the asset store.

A simplified explanation of the top bar includes: File which allows you to save and load up projects, edit which allows you to undo, copy and paste, assets which allows you to mess which the assets you have, game objects which allows you to create objects, Components which allows you to give effects such as physics, rendering and layout and window which allows you to add more windows which can make simplify what you are doing.

game object is very important because it allows you to make most things.

using the top bar you can save, load, undo, redo and play the layout

Construct 2

this is the level screen on this you see all of the level you have created which includes the character, the enemies and the world.

This is the coding screen which you put the code into, on construct 2 the coding is quite simple to write and organise as shown above.

This is the properties screen which gains information when you click onto any item in this case it was a spaceship. underneath it says the name, the layer, the angle, the opacity, the position, the size and other things.

This is the layer screen where you can choose which layer you want to be on aswell as lock others that you are not using.

this is the project screen where you can find everything that is in the game from sprites to sound files and even the levels and controls.

this is the tile map which should have the tiles which you can use to create a background/floor image.

and finally this is the objects screen where all objects appear from the player to the enemies and even the bullets and death animations.

CryEngine
CryEngine is a game engine designed by Crytek which originally came out 14 years ago on the second of May 2002. This was initiallyb used in Far Cry and has been continually updated to support newer consoles, CryEngine can also be licensed out to third party developers. some companies have modified versions for their games such as Ubisoft which has a modified version called Dunia Engine. CryEngine can be written in 3 languages such as C++, Lua and C#.

Graphical API
3D development software range widely some are more complex and some are simpler yet not as many things that you can do and have limited ability. Also some software become outdated over time such as LightWave as not many if any game development teams use this in comparison to Maya.

3D Studio Max
3D Studio Max which became 3D Studio and is now Autodesk 3ds Max is a 3D computer graphics program in which you can make 3D models, Images, Games and also animate them.it is used quite a lot by video game developers, many TV commercials and architecture studios, it can also be used for movies e.g. special effects.

Maya
Maya or Autodesk Maya it is used to create interactive 3D applications, including video games, animated film, TV series, or visual effects. This software is personally my favourite 3D modelling software since it’s also the one I practise with.

LightWave
LightWave or LightWave 3D has 3D modelling, and animation tools. including 999 free cross-platform render nodes, support for Windows and Mac UB 64 and 32-bit operating systems, free technical support and more. It has been used in film, television, motion graphics, digital matte painting, visual effects, video games development, product design, architectural visualizations, virtual production, music videos, pre-visualizations and advertising. LightWave is responsible for more artists winning Emmy Awards than any other 3D application.

Cinema 4D
Cinema 4D is a 3D modelling, animation and rendering software. It is capable of procedural and polygonal/subd modelling, animating, lighting, texturing, rendering, and common features found in 3D modelling applications. Cinema 4D Studio has advanced character tools, hair, a physics engine and an unlimited client network for rendering.

Blender
Blender is a professional and free 3D modelling software used for creating animated films, visual effects, art, 3D printed models, interactive 3D applications and video games. Blender's features include 3D modelling, UV unwrapping, texturing, raster graphics editing, rigging and skinning, fluid and smoke simulation, particle simulation, soft body simulation, sculpting, animating, match moving, motion tracking, rendering, video editing and compositing. It further features an integrated game engine. Although a good software it isn’t my favourite since its not what I’m used to which makes me try out shortcuts that do not work and I’m less proficient.

Sketchup
SketchUp is a 3D modelling program for a wide range of drawing applications such as architectural, interior design, civil and mechanical engineering, film, and video game design. There is an online open source library of free model assemblies, 3D Warehouse (which is just like the Unity asset store), to which users may put models. The program includes drawing layout functionality which allows you to choose drawing scales, adjust line weights, and add dimensions, callouts, and graphics to turn your model into a more professional document

ZBrush
ZBrush is a digital sculpting tool that combines 3D and 2.5D modelling, texturing and painting. It uses a pixol technology which stores lighting, color, material, and depth information for all objects on the screen. In Zbrush you are able to use over 40 million polygons to use in whatever you are making whether it be movies, games or animations once completed, the 3D model can be projected to the background which will then become a 2.5D image a successful game that uses 2.5D imagery is Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc.

Sound API
Audacity
Audacity is a free open source digital audio editor and recording computer software application, available for Windows, OS X, Linux and Unix. Audacity was originally released 16 years ago on the 28th May 2000 and is now on version 2.1.2 which was updated on 20th January 2016. On Audacity you can import and export sound files, editing sound files, recording sounds and plenty of other things.

Cakewalk
Cakewalk, Inc. is a music production software company. The company is best known product is their professional-level digital audio workstation software, SONAR. on SONAR you can compose, record, edit, mix and share music. You can use unlimited Audio, MIDI, Instrument, Loop, and Auxiliary Tracks.

Soundforge
Sony Sound Forge is a digital audio editing software made by Sony which is aimed at the professional and semi-professional markets. With sound forge you will be able to record audio quickly, process audio and render files with ease.

TV

TV gaming is a way of gaming accessible by a TV and no pother means of media. Access to games via subscription, you just need internet and no storage because all of the games are streamed to your TV because you don't actually have them on the TV because all software stored on TV servers. the input is usually something generic like a TV remote instead of a controller that is specialised for games, the games themselves also seem to be very bland and generic and you can usually challenge other uses. TV gaming has been a flop but it does have some good advantages like how it has good quality graphics, you only need the TV (no console) so no installation is actually required, it has a lower cost option that actual console or PC gaming, you have access to games around the globe and it has multiplayer and networking features. The limitations for TV gaming is things like how small it is and how the games are so very generic. the games are plain, repetitive and child like because they are aimed at children.

Sky
there used to be gaming channels on Sky but no longer. they used to have terrible games that were usually platformers with characters that were from cartoon characters or games such as Scooby Doo and you could use money to gain extra lives.
