PS4 -
The PlayStation 4 is a video game console developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Announced as the successor to the PlayStation 3 during a press conference on February 20, 2013. It competes with Nintendo's Wii U and Microsoft's Xbox One, as part of the eighth generation of video game consoles. The PS4 has the ability to stream gameplay/record and post online to show what you can do.
The ps4 was released 15/11/13 in the USA and Canada; it was later released in more European, Asian and South American countries by the end of 2013. The generation of the ps4 is 8th gen technology. The PS4 CPU is clocked at 1.6GHz and contains a custom AMD 8-core CPU with x86 based architecture. Both the ps4 and Xbox One has 8GB of Ram the Ps4 has an 8GB GDDR5. PS4 games are able to achieve a 1080p resolution at 30 or 60 frames per second. A PS4s Hard drive can have either 500 GB to one 1 TB of memory and can play both Blu-ray Discs and DVDs. The online connectivity of the PS4 is the PlayStation Network which allows you to add and play with friends over the internet. The PS4 uses Bluetooth to connect to its controllers. The Ps4 is a Japanese console which originated in Japan which allows more Japanese titles such as persona and danganronpa to be played on them. Because of this the target audience can be a bit difference which allows them to aim at people who like other things. On the surface the PS4 and Xbox One have similar other features. The ps4 has features like Crunchyroll, Epix, NBA Game Time, NHL GameCenter Live, YuppTV, the WWE Network and the free music video playing app VidZone. A limitation of a game console is that it cant be upgraded like a PC can. also unlike the old PS3 online service you now have to pay to play online with PlayStation plus. there are limits on recording video.
Xbox One -
The Xbox One is a home video game console developed by Microsoft. It was announced in May 2013, it is the successor to the Xbox 360 and the third console in the Xbox series, the first being the original Xbox and the second being the Xbox 360 both being best sellers. it was marketed by Microsoft as an "all-in-one entertainment system", which competed against other digital media players, such as the Apple TV and Google TV platforms, which i feel took away from the fact that it was a game system.
The Xbox One was released on November 22, 2013 in 13 territories and it is also a 8th gen console. The Xbox One has a custom 1.75GHz AMD 8-core CPU. Both the ps4 and Xbox One has 8GB of Ram the Xbox One has an 8GB DDR3. Xbox One is able to run at 720p or 900p at 30 or 60fps. This shows that the Ps4 is a better console. The Internal hard drive of a Xbox One can range from 500 GB to 1 TB or 2 TB, it can use USB 3.0 storage device. The Xbox One can read Ultra HD Blu-ray (Scorpio only), Blu-ray, DVD and CD. The online connectivity of the Xbox One is Xbox live which allows you to add and play with friends over the internet. The Xbox One uses Bluetooth to connect to its controllers. The Xbox one has a wide range of games giving it a wide range when it comes to a target audience although it does have a few console exclusive games such as Halo and Forza Horizon but I don’t think it has too big of a difference than PS4. On the surface the PS4 and Xbox One have similar other features. The Xbox one has ESPN, Fox Now, FX Now, NFL, Ted, The CW, Twitch, Univision Deportes and Verizon FiOS TV which the Ps4 does not have. A limitation of a game console is that it cant be upgraded like a PC can unless you were to buy something like the Xbox One Scorpio. A big limitation is that the Xbox has region locked games meaning that you cant import games.
Wii U -
The Wii U is a home video game console developed by Nintendo, and the successor to the Wii systems. Games can support any combination of the GamePad, Wii Remote, Nunchuk, Balance Board, or Nintendo's more traditionally designed Classic Controller or Wii U Pro Controller for input. The Wii U is backward compatible with all games released for the Wii.
The North American launch date would be November 18, 2012 and in Europe and Nintendo Australia it would be released on November 30, 2012. The Wii U is also an 8th gen console. Espresso is the codename of the 32-bit CPU used in the Wii U. It has been clocked at 1.24 GHz. The Wii U has 2GB of RAM. 1GB of RAM is used for the system functions. The other 1GB is allocated for games. The Wii U is able to run at 1080p.
Handhelds
3DS -
The Nintendo 3DS is a portable game console produced by Nintendo. The 3DS is capable of displaying stereoscopic 3D effects without the use of 3D glasses or additional accessories. Nintendo announced the device in March 2010 and officially unveiled it at E3 2010 on June 15, 2010.
The 3DS was released in japan on February 26, 2011, in North America on March 27, 2011, in Europe on March 25, 2011 and Australia on March 31, 2011. it is a 8th gen console. The main central processing unit is a ARM11 MPCore-based dual-core processor manufactured at 45 nm. The ram memory includes 128 MB FCRAM and 6 MB VRAM. The 3DS uses a DMP PICA200 Graphic Processing Unit. The 3DS has 1 GB internal flash memory, 128 MB FCRAM and 6 MB VRAM. it also has room for 2 SD cards. 2.4 GHz 802.11b with Wi-Fi and also infared to connect top other DS systems. The target audience of the DS systems is much like that of the Wii U systems being for children or hard-core Nintendo fans that love anything Nintendo such as Mario, donkey Kong, Zelda and Pokémon. Other features of the 3DS is things like the 3D function that can be activated by a switch on the top half. other features are the Miis which are basically a representation of yourself and you can also use a user-facing camera and two forward-facing VGA cameras. Limitations of the 3DS is the fact that the 3D function causes you to strain your eyes and makes them hurt and in my opinion can easily get dusty. its also easy to lose the stylus and Nintendo games are mostly based for a younger audience.
PS Vita -
The PlayStation Vita is a handheld game console developed and released by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The PS Vita which is the successor to the PSP came out in Japan on December 17, 2011, North America on February 15, 2012 (1st edition) / February 22, 2012 and in Europe on February 22, 2012. this is also a 8th gen console. The PS Vita has up to 2 GHz Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore. The Ps Vita has 512 MB RAM and 128 MB VRAM. The GPU for the PS Vita is a Quad-core PowerVR SGX543MP4+. The storage meter has 1 GB of flash memory. Just like the PS4 the PS Vita can connect to the PlayStation Network which allows you to add and play with friends over the internet. The PS Vita can also use WiFi to do a LAN connection with the PS4 so that you can use it as either a controller or a a second screen. Other features include have a 5MP rear camera and a front-facing VGA camera, Remote Play allows you to control your PS3/PS4 with your Vita and cross play lets you play with a PS3 with a PS Vita a game that uses this is minecraft. The target audience is just like the PS4's since they are both a part of Sony which is a very Japanese market, in my opinion some of the must buys for the PS Vita are Danganronpa and Persona. The Vita's resolution can't show off a 1080p video at full quality. Other limitations is that there is no internal memory, a poor battery life and a very poor browser.
Atari Lynx -
The Atari Lynx is an 8-bit handheld game console that was released by Atari Corporation. The Atari Lynx's features include being the first colour handheld, with a backlit display, a switchable right-handed/left-handed configuration, and the ability to network with up to 17 other consoles. Comlynx which was the networking system the Lynx used was originally developed to run over infrared links. This was changed to a cable-based networking system before the final release.
The Lynx was a handheld game console released by Atari in 1989 and is a 4th gen console. The Lynx was the first handheld game console with a colour LCD screen. The system is also notable for its forward-looking features, advanced graphics, and ambidextrous layout it also has a colour LCD display. The Lynx does not have any connectivity features or internal storage to store games. Its hard to really pin point the audience of the Lynx since it was the very first handheld console released by Atari in 1989 but back then the audience would have been more introverted males. It doesn't have any other functions because that's how a console should be. Limitations of the Atari Lynx is that all it can do is play a very few games and has no other features although this is all consoles could do back then. The Atari Lynx was quite expensive for its time selling at $180 back in 1989.
Arcade
Pokken
Year of Introduction and Generation - The game pokken cam out on Japanese arcade machines on July 16, 2015 and because of its popularity was later ported to Wii U on March 18, 2016 worldwide. although it came out in 2015 it is still a hard-coded arcade game so it is a gen 1 game. The target audience of Pokken is Pokemon fans and fighting game fans since it is a Pokemon and Tekken crossover game. Just like any other fighting game you can play with your firends who also put money into the machine. In my opinion the limitations for Pokken was that it had a very small roster for a game, a console game such as Naruto Ninja storm 4 has about 100 characters against a game like Pokken where you have to keep putting money in, going outside and you can only play with about 8 characters at the beginning and now only has 17 still.
Tekken
Tekken was released in arcades in December 1994 and on the PlayStation in 1995. This is a hard-coded game so it is a gen 1 game. Tekken connected two people next each other so that they could fight each other on the game. The game was the first PlayStation game to sell over a million units. Guinness World Records awarded Tekken with multiple records in the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2008. These include, "First PlayStation Game to Sell Over One Million Units", "First Fighting Game To Feature Simulated 3D", as well as a record for the entire series as "The Best Selling Fighting Series for PlayStation Consoles. The Tekken series is loved by most gaming fans and especially fighting game fans. A limitation of the original Tekken is the old graphics and the mere 17 characters but these were actually very good for back in the day. other limitations are the same as most arcade machines being that you need to keep spending money when you could just but the home version.
Pacman
The original pac man machines came out in japan in May 22, 1980 and is one of the very first games to come out and to this day still one of the classics that everyone knows. This is a hard-coded game so it is a gen 1 game. The specs of the pac man machine is a CPU: Zilog Z80 @ 3.072 MHz, a Namco WSG (Waveform Sound Generator) sound chip, a Namco NVC293 video shifter GPU. it has a video resolution of 224×288 for Pac-Man. It also has 60.61 FPS with 4KB RAM and originally 8 bit colouring. The limits of Pac Man is the very limited game play but it is also not limited because of that because of how addicting the game play was and when you try to beat your friends it definitely isn't limited. The main limits of an arcade machine is the fact that it is hard coded, you need a constant supply of money, it definitely isn't portable and when someone else is playing it you cant play it yourself.
The original
how far it has come even though it is a simple game
PC
PC's change through the years and can become how you specify them. old gaming PC's would have poor specs such as a average PC in 1984 having a magnetic tape as storage, a RAM of 128kb at max, a CPU of 4MHz, a CGA VRAM graphics and a resolution of 160x200 but over time PCs have changed and a good thing about PC is the fact that they have interchangeable parts and can be constantly improved, this is shown because a good computer now a day is far superior and would have been unimaginable back then having a storage of 1TB, a CPU of 3.0GHz, 8GB of RAM, the graphics card would be 2GB GDDR5 with a resolution of 3820x2160. ill show off the evolution of PC gaming through the years. The PC is limited by the hardware you use on it but you can also increase the specs by upgrading your hardware. another limitation is that you can never play console exclusives on it. one of the biggest limitations is the fact that it is more expensive to get a good gaming PC than a console.
1984 - PaperBoy. in Paperboy the players take the role of a paperboy who delivers a fictional newspaper called "The Daily Sun" along a suburban street on his bicycle.
1993 - DOOM. DOOM is a science fiction horror-themed FPS game where players take over the role of an unnamed space marine, fighting his way through hordes of invading demons from Hell.
1998 - Half Life. Half-Life/HλLF-LIFE is a science fiction first-person shooter video game developed by Valve. It was Valve's debut product and the first in the Half-Life series. Players assume the role of Dr. Gordon Freeman, who must fight his way out of a secret research facility after a teleportation experiment goes disastrously wrong, fighting enemies and solving puzzles.
2000 - Counter Strike. Counter-Strike is a first-person shooter video game developed by Valve Corporation. Set in various locations around the globe, players assume the roles of members of combating teams of the governmental counter-terrorist forces and various terrorist militants opposing them. During each round of game play, the two teams are tasked with defeating the other by the means of either achieving the map's objectives, or else eliminating all of the enemy combatants. Each player may customize their arsenal of weapons and accessories at the beginning of every match, with currency being earned after the end of each round. This kind of game is very common now a days whereas back then there wasnt that many and this certain game stood out.
2007 - Crysis. Crysis is a first-person shooter video game that has been praised for its milestones in graphical design. The single-player campaign has the player assume the role of U.S. Army Delta Force soldier Jake Dunn, referred to in-game by his callsign, Nomad. Nomad is armed with various futuristic weapons and equipment. In Crysis, the player fights both North Korean and extraterrestrial enemies in various environments on and around the island.
2011 - Skyrim. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed and published by Bethesda. The main campaign revolves around the player character and their effort to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world.
2014 - Watchdogs. WATCH_DOGS is an open world action-adventure third-person shooter video game. The campaign follows a hacker and his efforts to seek revenge after the killing of his niece.
As you can definitely tell everything about games has improved in the past 30 years and that they will keep on improving. in another 30 years i wonder what they will be like, will they have improved so much that games like watchdogs will look like paperboy to us? probably not but its exciting to see what will come next.
TV
TV gaming is a way of gaming accessible by a TV and no pother means of media. Access to games via subscription, you just need internet and no storage because all of the games are streamed to your TV because you don't actually have them on the TV because all software stored on TV servers. the input is usually something generic like a TV remote instead of a controller that is specialised for games, the games themselves also seem to be very bland and generic and you can usually challenge other uses. TV gaming has been a flop but it does have some good advantages like how it has good quality graphics, you only need the TV (no console) so no installation is actually required, it has a lower cost option that actual console or PC gaming, you have access to games around the globe and it has multiplayer and networking features. The limitations for TV gaming is things like how small it is and how the games are so very generic. the games are plain, repetitive and child like because they are aimed at children.
Glossary
- Interactive - The TV is interactive but is not as interactive as something like a console e.g. PS4 because on the TV you can use a TV remote whereas the PS4 can use the PS Move, the controller and the VR.
- Online - as soon as you turn the TV on you can play games without any problems, just stream from the server.
- PSB (Public Service Broadcasting) - this is broadcasting intended for public benefit rather than to serve purely commercial interests e.g. gameplay or news
- Cable, Satellite (Connectivity) - you need to be able to connect with the TVs servers and to do this you need to have your TV connected via cable or satellite
- MHP (Multimedia Home Platform) - This is intended to combine digital television with the Internet and the World Wide Web. The result will make high-definition television in an interactive, multi-purpose communication network available to consumers and businesses allowing TVs to be far more interactive.
